Crowns may be recommended for teeth that are broken, worn out or have parts of your tooth destroyed by decay or after a root canal. It involves shaping your existing tooth down and making a model on which your crown is made. This crown is then permanently cemented on your tooth. It thus becomes the reinforced outer surface of your tooth. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal or both. Often the porcelain crowns are preferred due to their translucency and strength.
